One of the most exciting parts about homecoming is the many great homecoming themes that people come up with each year. The student government is usually the ones to meet and help decide on possible homecoming themes. It’s important that the student government do this in enough time for the possible themes to be discussed and voted on long before homecoming. In fact, you may not know it but most homecoming themes are actually determined in summer to allow plenty of time for voting, planning and preparations before homecoming time arrives.
What should you do if you are on the committee in charge of deciding on a homecoming theme and other homecoming and spirit week ideas? The good news is that there are many sources of information to help you out there. In most cases, you should narrow down your ideas to two or three and then allow the class to vote on them to choose their favorite. You want to try to get as many students as possible in on the discussion and voting process to be sure more people will be happy with the idea that is chosen.
What kind of trends for 2007 can we expect to see? This is an exciting time for students and faculty alike as many great new trends are coming out in recent years. We are seeing themes such as George Mason’s “Green n’ Gold, Never Fold”, University of Florida’s “Nation of Champions” and Southwest Baptist University’s, "There's No Place Like Home: Follow the Purple Brick Road”.
Many great homecoming theme trends we are seeing for 2007 involve recognizing those you have done great things, school pride and pride for one’s countries. Many other themes revolve around times in history or past eras. This is a way for students to look to the future by remembering and celebrating the past.
This is certainly not the end of the many homecoming themes and ideas that exist and this year we can expect to see many new, creative ideas. Remember that when you come up with a homecoming theme, there will typically also need to be both a Junior and a Senior float based on the theme. Typically the seniors get first choice on their float ideas so keep this in mind. Floats can be as different as they want as long as they still follow the same themes for the homecoming.
With so many homecoming themes to choose from, it could be difficult for you and your class to choose the right one. Some tips to keep in mind are to look into past homecomings at the school and see what ideas have already been done. You might also want to look into past homecoming themes of other schools in your district. While it’s ok to use a theme that another school has used, most school committees decide they want to be as original as possible so doing some research helps you see what has already been done before.
Remember that every detail of the homecoming event will revolve around the theme so be sure you have a clearly defined theme that people will be able to understand and play upon. When you plan your homecoming, you will create an event that the entire school will remember for the rest of their lives.
